Andrew Jackson Borden was born in Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA, on 13 September 1822. He is the son of Abraham Bowen Borden and Phebe Davenport Borden. He was of English and Welsh descent. Andrew was raised in a modest surrounding but later struggled financially as a young man.
Andrew Jackson Borden toiled during his youthful days despite being the offspring of wealthy and influential local residents. He had been married twice. He married Sarah Anthony Borden (née Morse; 1823–1863) in the year 1845. They are the parents of Lizzie Borden, Alice Esther Borden, and Emma Lenora Borden (1851–1927). Alice died at the age of two years.
A man named William Borden was suspected to be Andrew’s illegitimate son. Andrew Jackson Borden later got married to Abby Durfee Gray. They married in the year 1866. Andrew worked as a carpenter’s helper. He eventually succeeded in the manufacture and sale of furniture and caskets, then became a successful property developer.
Andrew Jackson Borden became the director of various textile mills. He was also the owner of considerable commercial property and was president of the Union Savings Bank and a director of the Durfee Safe Deposit and Trust Co.

Andrew Jackson Borden was killed on 4 August 1892, in Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA. He died at the age of 69 years old. He was slumped on a couch in his downstairs sitting room, struck 10 or 11 times with a hatchet-like weapon.
Andrew Jackson Borden was suspected to be sleeping when he was attacked because his eyes had been split cleanly in two. He had a still-bleeding wound when he was found which suggested a very recent attack. Andrew’s wife Abby Durfee Gray was murdered before her husband.
Abby was first struck on the side of the head with a hatchet, which cut her just above the ear, causing her to turn and fall face down on the floor, creating contusions on her nose and forehead. Her killer struck her multiple times, delivering 17 more direct hits to the back of her head, killing her.

The family’s physician called Dr. Bowen, pronounced both victims Andrew and his wife Abby dead after he arrived from his home across the street. At the time of Andrew’s death, his estate was valued at $300,000 (equivalent to $9,000,000 in 2021 and $9,630,000 in 2022).
Lizzie Borden was a suspect in the murders of her father Andrew and her stepmother Abby. On August 11, she was served with a warrant of arrest and jailed. She was tried and acquitted of the murders. The case and trial received widespread publicity throughout the United States.

Lizzie Borden died of pneumonia at age 66, on June 1, 1927, in Fall River, Massachusetts, the U.S. Nine days later, her older sister Emma died from chronic nephritis at the age of 76 in a nursing home in Newmarket, New Hampshire. They were buried side by side in the family plot in Oak Grove Cemetery.
