Susan Sarandon was born in Jackson Heights, Queens in New York City on October 4, 1946. She is of mixed ancestry. She grew up in a catholic family with her siblings and parents. She was born to Lenora Marie and Phillip Leslie Tomalin. Phillip Leslie Tomalin was an advertising executive, television producer, and one-time nightclub singer. Her father worked for WOR-TV in New York City. Her father was of English, Irish, and Welsh ancestry. Her father’s English ancestors came from Hackney in London and his Welsh ancestors from Bridgend. For her mother, she is of Italian descent, with ancestors from the regions of Tuscany and Sicily. She had eight siblings and she is the eldest of nine children of her parents. Her siblings are Phillip L. Tomalin Jr., Tim Tomalin, O’Brian Tomalin, Terry Tomalin, Amanda Tomalin, Missy Tomalin, Bonnie Lyon, and Meredith Tomalin.
Susan Sarandon attended Saint Francis Grammar School in the nearby Borough of Metuchen, where she graduated on June 12, 1960. She attended Edison High School, a public school located in the southern half of Edison Township, where she graduated on June 15, 1964. Susan Sarandon is the eldest of nine children born to Lenora Marie and Phillip Leslie Tomalin. She has eight siblings, four brothers, and four sisters. Her four brothers are Phillip L. Tomalin Jr., Tim Tomalin, O’Brian Tomalin, and Terry Tomalin while her four sisters are Amanda Tomalin, Missy Tomalin, Bonnie Lyon, and Meredith Tomalin. Susan Sarandon in an interview with Time Out magazine revealed that she had a lot of responsibility as the eldest child and said it was a good thing. She said that being the oldest of multiple sisters and brothers introduced her to reality and kept her grounded. She also acknowledged that her brothers and sisters looked up to her as a mother figure because her “parents were pretty overwhelmed.”

Her brother, Terry Tomalin was an open water swimming race director, an outdoorsman, journalist, author, and a Boy Scout leader from Florida. He was an of the Tampa Bay Frogman Swim, a 5 km charity swim in Tampa Bay. He developed a love for camping and the outdoors during family vacations to an island off the coast of Maine. He broke one of the biggest stories of his career on Halloween in 1985. He passed away of a heart attack while taking a lifeguard class with his son at the North Shore Aquatic Complex in St Petersburg. He died in May 2016.

Susan Sarandon has been married to actor Chris Sarandon but they divorced in 1979. She later had a relationship with the Italian filmmaker, Franco Amurri with whom she had a daughter in 1985. She got in a long-term relationship with actor Tim Robbins from 1988 to 2009 and they had two sons. Her daughter Eva Amurri became an actress who appeared in shows like the Showtime series Californication and Fox’s New Girl.
