He was the son of Dr. Thomas Irving Hoen and pioneering neurosurgeon Anne Nancy Townsend (Stocking) Hoen and the brother of Thomas Townsend Hoen per Wikitree. He graduated from Harvard College in 1959 with a degree in History and then settled in New York City.

Robin became a Harvard-educated banker. He worked as the Vice President in the International Department of the Chase Manhattan Bank with responsibility for operations in dozens of countries throughout the world. In 1980, he moved to West Hartford, Connecticut, where he became Chief Operating Officer at Equator Bank, which served the countries of sub-Saharan Africa.
In 1988, Robin Hoen was also named Executive Director of the United States South Africa Leadership Exchange Program (USSALEP) in Washington, DC, a non-profit dedicated to the support of democratic institutions in pre- and post-Apartheid South Africa per his Obituary.

According to Closerweekly The Goodbye, Columbus star met Robin Hoen, a Harvard student, just as she was searching for her big break. Six months after she started her first fashion job, Ali married Robin in 1961. “I was getting married to a wonderful man, whose family wanted me in the Social Register,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald in August 2019.
The New York native divorced her first husband in 1962 after one year of marriage. The reason behind their divorce was not made public. Following her first divorce, MacGraw had a string of relationships and one abortion; the procedure was still illegal at the time. Robin also moved after their marriage came to an end. He got married to his wife Caroline (née Henwood); and they had their three children- Nicholas, Oliver, and Victoria.

According to his Obituary, he was a keen sportsman who spent many of his happiest moments swimming and boating in the waters of Lake Manitou in Quebec and Lake Honnedaga at the Hoen family camp in the Adirondacks.

Robin Hoen passed away on September 13, 2016. He was 79 years old at the time of his death. The cause of his death was not revealed however he was survived by a loving family who will deeply miss his boundless optimism and his unending support of them.
Robin Hoen’s ex-wife MacGraw has lived in Tesuque, New Mexico, since 1994, after the house she rented in Malibu was destroyed by a fire. MacGraw was originally intended to make a cameo as herself in the Breaking Bad episode “Grey Matter” as a guest at the birthday party of character Elliott Schwartz, set in Santa Fe, but her appearance did not make the final cut of the episode.
