Mary Diroma was the wife of Jay Silverheels. Mary Diroma’s husband Silverheels was an Indigenous Canadian actor and athlete. He gained much popularity after he played the role of Tonto, the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger in the American Western television series The Lone Ranger.

Mary Diroma is famous for being the wife of Jay silverheels. She is the second woman Silverheels got married to. Though not much is known about her age and date of birth, she was an Italian-American from Upstates New York. Her husband on the other hand May 26, 1912, in Canada, on the Six Nations of the Grand River, near Hagersville, Ontario.

Jay Silverheels and his wife Diroma in 1946. Before their marriage, Silverheels was married to  Bobbie Smith. Silverheels and Smith’s marriage came to an end in 1943. There isn’t much information available related to why their marriage came to an end.

Two years after their marriage came to an end, he tied the knot with Diroma and the couple had four children: Marilyn Silverheels, a teacher; Pamela Silverheels; Karen Silverheels; and Jay Anthony Silverheels Jr. His son Jay Jr., did voices for Saturday morning cartoons in the 1970s. They lived in Canoga Park, California.

On The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962), Silverheels told Johnny Carson that he had married his Italian wife to “get back at Christopher Columbus”. They called their children “Indalions”.

Silverheels suffered a stroke

Mary Diroma’s husband, Silverheels suffered a stroke in 1976, and the following year, Clayton Moore – his co-star on The Lone Ranger – rode an American Paint Horse in Silverheels’ honor in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. Silverheels died on March 5, 1980, from stroke, at age 67, in Calabasas, California. He was cremated at the Chapel of the Pines Crematory, and his ashes were returned to the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario.

Speaking on her husband’s death, Diroma revealed -“He was an extreme proud man and could not understand why he had lots of setbacks”. Diroma and her husband stayed married until his death. There were married for 34 years.

Not much is known about where she is now. She went totally out of the limelight after her husband’s death. It is unclear whether Mary Diroma is still alive or dead as of 2022. Her son Jay Jr on the other hand is still alive as of 2022. He is 64 years old.
