Lucille Goldstein was born on July 27, 1915, in New York, New York, United States. She was the daughter of Abraham Gross and Ida Gross Raver and the half-sister of Jacob Raver and Anne Raver. Lucille was married to Bernard Goldstein. Her husband worked in the garment business as a textile buyer. Elliott Gould’s childhood wasn’t an easy one. Born Elliott Goldstein in Brooklyn in 1938, he was the only child of the couple. The actor’s father Bernard had tried to elope with another girl he met at a sweet sixteen party. Their families stopped them, and he ended up marrying Gould’s mother, Lucille. Elliott’s parents stayed together for 27 years until they finally ended it all – and his father reunited with his first love and moved to Florida.
Lucille Goldstein, an ambitious stage mother ploughed all her energies into her son’s future. Lucille made ends meet by selling artificial flowers to neighborhood beauty shops. She saved up some money to help his son take elocution classes. Elliott was soon singing, tap-dancing, and performing in local neighboring theatres.
12 years old, Elliott was mentored by an “incorrigible” Irishman named Billy Quinn. “I didn’t want to learn. I didn’t want to know,” says Gould – yet Quinn pounded away until he did. “He broke through to me.” He began acting on Broadway in the late 1950s, making his professional debut in a minor role in the musical Rumple (1957).
Elliott’s mother remembers. “This child,” she says per TIME, “was too good to be true. He was too well-behaved. He wanted to please so desperately. I was too strict with him. Yes, Mama watched over him perhaps too closely. But it was done out of love. I wouldn’t leave any stone unturned as far as this child went. I’d cut off my arm for this child.“

Lucille Goldstein passed away on September 24, 1998, in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles County, California, United States. She was 83 years old at the time of her death. The cause of her death has not been revealed by the family. Elliott Gould’s family was Jewish, and his grandparents were from Ukraine, Poland, and Russia.

He has been married three times, twice to the same woman: Barbra Streisand on July 6, 1971, and they divorced after a two-year separation. They had a child- Jason Gould together.
