Lucien Chanel is best identified as the brother of Coco Chanel. Lucien’s sister Coco Chanel was a well-known and successful fashion designer and businesswoman. She rose to become one of the best in the fashion business. She was the founder and namesake of the Chanel brand. She is known for her signature scent, Chanel No. 5, which was launched in 1921. Several films including Coco Chanel (2008), Chanel Solitaire (1981), Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (2009), and Coco avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel) (2009), were made about her.

Lucien Chanel was born in the year 1889 but his birthday is unknown. He is one of the three sons of Albert Chanel and Jeanne Devolle. Albert Chanel worked as an itinerant street vendor who peddled work clothes and undergarments, traveling to and from market towns. Jeanne Devolle worked as a laundrywoman, in the charity hospital run by the Sisters of Providence (a poorhouse) in Saumur, Maine-et-Loire.

Lucien Chanel’s parents were not married when they gave birth to their first child, Lucien’s elderly sister Julia-Berthe Chanel on September 11, 1882. On 17 November 1884 in Courpière, Puy-de-Dôme, France, Albert Chanel, and Jeanne Devolle got married. Lucien Chanel has five siblings. His sisters are Julia-Berthe Chanel, Coco Chanel (GabrielleChanel), and Antoinette Chanel.

Lucien Chanel’s brothers are Alphonse Chanel and Augustin Chanel. His brother Augustin who was born on May 28, 1891, passed away on November 26, 1891, in Courpière, France, six months after his birth. The family lived crowded into a one-room lodging in the town of Brive-la-Gaillarde. Much is unknown about Lucien Chanel’s childhood experiences but he was not from a rich background.

Lucien Chanel lost his mother Jeanne Devolle in 1895. Jeanne died of tuberculosis at the age of 32 years. Lucien did not attend school. His father Albert Chanel was either unable to support his children or unwilling to support his children. He eventually decided to abandon all his children. He sent Lucien Chanel and his brother Alphonse Chanel to work as farm laborers.

Julia-Berthe, Gabrielle (Coco Chanel), and Antoinette ended up at the convent of Aubazine, which ran an orphanage. After this, nothing is known about Lucien Chanel and his brother Alphonse Chanel other than their birth and death dates. Per sources, Lucien Chanel was the husband of Anaïs Chanel. Details of their union have not been found.

Lucien Chanel’s sister Julia-Berthe gave birth to André Palasse. She is said to have committed suicide. Antoinette Chanel was married to Oscar Edward Flemming, a Canadian-born airman. Antoinette died in 1920, at age 33. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel also known as Coco Chanel was a costume designer and businesswoman, who extended her influence beyond couture clothing, realizing her aesthetic design in jewelry, handbags, and fragrance.

Coco Chanel was credited in the post-World War I era with popularizing sporty, casual chic as the feminine standard of style. She is the only fashion designer listed on Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. She designed her famed interlocked-CC monogram, which has been in use since the 1920s.

According to her IMDb profile, Coco Chanel was known for The Rules of the Game (1939), Tonight or Never (1931), and The Blood of a Poet (1932). She was never married but was involved in several relationships.

What Happened To Lucien Chanel?

Lucien Chanel died of a heart attack. He died in the year 1941 at the age of 51-52 years. His sister Coco Chanel died on January 10, 1971, in Paris, France, at age 87. Most of her estate was inherited by her nephew André Palasse, who lived in Switzerland, and his two daughters, who lived in Paris. Her last words were: “You see, this is how you die.”
