How old is Luba Farmiga?

Luba Farmiga gained much of her popularity from being the mother of Vera Farmiga. Her daughter is 50 years old as of 2023 but Luba’s age and date of birth are unknown, however, she was born to her parents Nadia and Theodore Spas. In an interview, Luba’s daughter revealed her parents were both born after the second world war, but her grandparents “went through hell, saw unimaginable things, stuff you shouldn’t have to bear.”

Vera’s maternal grandparents were so much affected during World War II. After they were displaced and kept at a displaced person camp in Karlsfeld, Germany, they fell in love. The Many Saints of Newark actress shared that she considered herself “100% Ukrainian-American”.

To cement her Ukrainian identity, she also attended a Ukrainian Catholic school with all extracurricular activities in the Ukrainian community of Irvington, New Jersey. She even became a professional Ukrainian folk dancer! The actress grew up in a Ukrainian community and did not learn to speak English until she was six because their parents wanted them to have a solid Ukrainian foundation per The Things.

During the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine as part of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the family expressed their support for Ukraine and Vera quoted the anthem of Ukraine, while Luba shared her photo with the Ukrainian flag.

Vera Farmiga’s mother was a Schoolteacher

Luba Farmiga was a schoolteacher according to her daughter’s Wikipedia. She attended Kean University aka Newark State College, Union, NJ where she studied for her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Early Childhood Education and Teaching. According to her Linkedin profile, she was also Bank Officer at National Westminster Bank between 1993 – 1995. She also worked as Receptionist, Medical Records Manager at Whitehouse Station Family Medicine between 2001 – 2012.

Lubomyra “Luba” (née Spas) is married to Mykhailo Farmiga a systems analyst-turned-landscaper. Luba and her husband had 6 children aside from Vera- They are Taissa Farmiga, Vera Farmiga, Nadia Farmiga, Laryssa Farmiga, Alexander Farmiga, Victor Farmiga, and Stephan Farmiga.

Luba Farmiga is also a grandmother. Her daughter Vera gave birth to a son, Fynn, in January 2009 in Rhinebeck, New York, and a daughter, Gytta, in November 2010.  In addition, Luba Farmiga also has two grandsons from her daughter Nadia, Tadeo, and the other’s name is not known.

The Farmiga family moved around a bit in New Jersey, finally settling down on a large farmland in Wilmington. In an interview with Refinery29 in early 2014, The Conjuring actress said she and her siblings “grew up in a gentle and loving family” with “no deep or twisted secrets,” describing it as the potential reason why she ventured into “dark subject matter” for her various horror film roles.

Luba converted with her family from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to Pentecostalism. However Vera is now a nondenominational Christian; in a 2011 interview with Christianity Today, the actress said: “I grew up in a Ukrainian Catholic-turned-Christian household, and that is my family’s faith. My father instilled in me … to define God, to define holiness for myself. That was my parents’ number one lesson for us. I don’t belong to any particular church, but I’m someone who will be able to walk into any place of worship, any house of worship, and have a direct correspondence.”
