Lori Dassey was formerly married to Steven Avery who is an American laborer who served 18 years in prison from the year 1985 to 2003 for rape and attempted murder. Lori’s past husband was born Steven Allen Avery on July 9, 1962, in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, U.S.

He has been wrongfully convicted in 1985 of sexual assault and attempted murder. He served eighteen years of a thirty-two-year sentence and his conviction was overturned because of DNA evidence, released in 2003. Two years later, Steven was charged with murder in a different case and was found guilty.

Lori’s ex-husband in 1981 got convicted for burglarizing a bar, he served 10 months in jail. He was guilty of animal cruelty after pouring gasoline on a cat and tossing it into a bonfire, for which he was sentenced to nine months.

Also, in 1985 he ran afoul of the law when he forced a car driven by Sandra Morris: a cousin who was the wife of a sheriff’s deputy, off the road and pointed a gun at her, claiming he wanted her to stop “spreading rumors” about him. He got a six-year sentence for the car incident but was granted bail.

Lori’s ex-husband murdered Teresa Halbach, a freelance photographer, and was arrested, and while in jail he settled his civil suit for $400,000. Steven’s 16-year-old nephew reported to the police detectives that he and Steven Avery raped and murdered Teresa Halbach and burned her body.

Steven Avery accused the law officials of framing him to undermine his civil suit. Steven Avery became the subject of the popular TV documentary series called Making a Murderer (2015 and 2018), which drew international attention.
