Ridley Scott and Tony Scott’s father was a Military officer
Colonel Francis Percy Scott was born in the United Kingdom. Aside from being an officer in the Royal Engineers, he is also famous for being the father of famous directors Tony Scott and Ridley Scott. Francis Scott was married to Elizabeth Jean Scott. Aside from their two famous sons, they also had an elder son Frank Scott who also joined the Merchant Navy when Ridley was still young and the pair had little contact.

Born two years before World War II began, Ridley Scott and his younger brother were brought up in a military family. Francis Percy Scott was absent for most of their early life. The family moved around a lot; they lived in Cumberland as well as other areas in England, in addition to Wales and Germany. After the war, the Scott family moved back to County Durham and eventually settled on Teesside.
After the war, Ridley, Tony, and their eldest brother, Frank moved to Germany, where their father, Francis, worked until he brought the family back to England and became a docks manager in Stockton-on-Tees.
Talking about his parents, Tony Scott told the Hollywood reporter– “We had a brilliant upbringing and we never wanted for anything, even though we went through highs and lows of finances,” Tony observed. “Dad was a very gentle, sweet man. Mum was the matriarch and the patriarch of the family.
He continued- “She ran the roost with a steel fist, but at the same time there was respect and love for her. The driving force Ridley and I have comes from Mum, but they were chalk and cheese. There was a real big, sweet heart to her and at the same time a determination and toughness.” He told the outlet, “We were a very, very tight family.“
While Tony and Ridley were each drawn to drawing and art early on, Frank was different and didn’t have any artistic leanings; he was closer to their father in terms of personality. At the beginning of Ridley and Tony’s careers, their father Francis Percy Scott did not understand why they both wanted to go to art school.
What happened to Francis Percy Scott?
Tony Scott and his elder brother Ridley Scott have not spoken much about what happened to their father. Francis’s wife Elizabeth Jean Scott passed away in 2001. Tony Scott also died by suicide back in 2012. On 19 August 2012, at approximately 12:30 pm PDT, Scott jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the San Pedro port district of Los Angeles.

In a November 2014 interview with Variety, his elder brother Ridley Scott described his death as “inexplicable”, saying that Tony had been “fighting a lengthy battle with cancer—a diagnosis the family elected to keep private during his treatments and in the immediate wake of his death”, yet mentioning “his recovery“. Frank Scott also passed away in 1980 at the age of 45. His cause of death was revealed to be Cancer.
