A graduate of Dartmouth, with a degree in philosophy, Paul retired at an early age to write about philosophy.
Paul Margulies was the son of Henrietta (née Greenspan) and Irving Margulies. Although famous on Madison Avenue for his innovative work in advertising, Paul was best known, at the time of his death, as the father of actress Julianna Margulies.
Julianna has never talked much about her mother. Francesca Gardner enrolled in the School of American Ballet (SAB) when she was seven years old. She lived in Brooklyn, and every day she would take the train into Manhattan by herself to study dance.
“Ballet saved her life,” Julianna says. “That’s what she always said. She hated school, her home was not a happy place, and she felt that ballet allowed her to escape a Brooklyn life that would have trapped her. Manhattan to her was mecca; it was magic. She stayed at SAB until she was 18, and then she joined the American Ballet Theatre company.”
Her parents were both Jewish, descendants of Jewish immigrants from Romania, Austria, Hungary, and Russia. They divorced when she was a year old.

Francesca Gardner Margulies and Paul Margulies’ daughter Julianna Margulies was born in Spring Valley, New York, the youngest of three daughters. In her memoir, Sunshine Girl, She wrote that her parents both adhered to the teachings of anthroposophy.
Julianna, herself, has said that she does not hold religious beliefs, although she is ethnically Jewish and teaches the traditions to her son. In a 2013 interview, she said, “I would say if I had a religion, it would be gratitude…I love the tradition of Judaism that on Friday nights, Shabbat means ‘Goodbye to the workweek; hello to family and the weekend.’”

While she is from New York, she moved with her mother, Francesca Gardner Margulies to many different countries and states throughout her youth, including Sussex, England, and Paris, France. As a result, French was Julianna’s first language. She has since lost the ability to speak it fluently.
She married attorney Keith Lieberthal, the son of academic Kenneth Lieberthal, on November 10, 2007, in Lenox, Massachusetts. Kieran Lindsay Lieberthal is their son. They live in New York City. In addition, the couple owns a country house in Upstate New York.
