Doc Severinsen gained public attention for being the colorful “Tonight Show” bandleader and was known for his outrageous outfits on set and for his obsessive relationship with the love of his life — his trumpet. The Grammy award winner has made more than 30 albums–from big band to jazz-fusion to classical. Two critically acclaimed Telarc CDs with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra showcase his multifaceted talents from Bach to ballads.
Doc was awarded a Grammy Award for “Best Jazz Instrumental Performance – Big Band” for his recording of Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Band-Volume I. Aside from having a fantastic career, Doc is also a beloved family man, husband, father, and grandfather. Severinsen has been quoted as saying that he has been married four times.
“I’ve had an interesting life. I’ve been married four times, and my life now is with a person … girlfriend who is a music professor at University of Tennessee. I’m into my great-grandchildren now, and their mother, my granddaughter, is a fabulous musician.” the trumpeter said- Severinsen is a father of four children. Nancy Severinsen
Nancy Severinsen use to perform with his father. She is the eldest child of the trumpeter. Nancy was born in 1950. As of 2023, she is 71 years old. She was part of a vocal group called “Today’s Children” which often performed with Doc. She also appeared on the Mike Douglas Show in 1967 with her father to perform the song “If You Love Me”. Doc Severinsen and his daughter Nancy also performed together at the American Invitational horse jumping competition in Tampa in 1974.

Nancy worked as the co-producer of her father’s Never Too Late: The Doc Severinsen Story in 2020. The show traces the life and groundbreaking career of the unstoppable musical icon. She has also worked on several hit shows and some of her most recent shows as “So You Think You Can Dance”, “American Idol”, and Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas (2012 – 2013).
Allen Severinsen is a Professional Racehorse trainer
Doc Severinsen’s son Allen chose a different career path from that of his father. While the father is famous for doing magic with his trumpet, Allen Severinsen on the other hand decided to be a professional racehorse trainer. Per UPI, Allen was suspended in 1989 from the Bay Meadows track after two horses he trained tested positive for a drug after winning a race.
The two drugs found in the horse Acepromazine and Procaine are mostly used in the treatment of racehorses but their presence in post-race testing is a violation of California Horse Racing Board rules. Acepromazine can have a settling effect on a nervous horse and Procaine is sometimes used with penicillin in treating infections.

However, Allen Severinsen said he was 100 percent innocent and doesn’t know how that happened. He promised the board to be more organized next time and make sure it doesn’t happen again. The Stewards also said Allen’s story was plausible enough and that perhaps this was an error at the barn.

Doc Severinsen’s other children are Cindy Severinsen, Robin Severinsen, and Judy Severinsen. Some sources claim Cindy Severinsen is a realtor, however, this information is not verified. Cindy Severinsen has been very private about her life and has not spoken much in recent years.
Judy Severinsen
Per the Newyork times‘ report, Judy Severinsen was engaged to Emory Castimore Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Castimore of Augusta. Their wedding was planned for Aug. 15 1971 at the home of the parents of the bride. The outlet also reported that Doc Severinsen’s daughter Judy Severinsen is a graduate of Southern Seminary Junior College and her fiance is also completing his junior year at Lycoming (Pa.) College and he plans to study veterinary medicine.
Robin Severinsen also loves horses
Per the Oklahoman report, Robin Severinsen went to high school in New Jersey, and like her four siblings, she also learned to play musical instruments growing up. She learned the trumpet and the drums, and continues to play “just for fun.” Like her three sisters- Cindy, Nancy, and Judy, she joined the drum and bugle corps in school, but she didn’t like it because it took time away from her first love.
Doc Severinsen’s daughter Robin Severinsen is married to Frank Merrill and the two have found their love for horses. Per reports, the couple first meet at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. He was 19. She was 14, and it was the first of many casual meetings as they traveled the quarter horse circuit.
Robin showed quarter horses across the country from the time she was in middle school. The day she graduated from high school, she drove to Ocala, Fla., to study under American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Famer Carol Harris. From Florida, Robin moved to Aubrey, Texas, where she and her dad set up a broodmare farm. Robin Severinsen is a mother, her daughter McKenzie also helps on their farm, her daughter Megan majored in communications at the University of Oklahoma and her son Tyler was a member of the Southwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo team, The Oklahoman reported.
