How did Estell Getty and her husband Arthur Gettleman meet? Getty was introduced to Arthur Gettleman, whose last name she later used as the basis for her stage name, at a party by her friends from the New York theater circuit. The two married nine months later on December 21, 1947.
They got married in a beautiful ceremony in the presence of their friends, family, and loved ones. They had two children together, sons Carl Gettleman and Barry Gettleman.
After they got married, Getty and Arthur lived in the Bronx for a time, and, after the births of their two sons, Barry and Carl, the family moved to Oakland Gardens, Queens, living in a liberal-minded cooperative built for Jewish veterans of World War II called Bell Park Gardens. Carl’s father worked with his grandfather in glass installation.
Carl’s parents lived separately for some time in the mid-80s to mid-90s, as his mother, Getty moved to California to work on The Golden Girls, and Arthur had no desire to leave New York and continued to work in the family’s glass business. Carl Gettleman’s parents remained married until his father’s death on September 24, 2004, at the age of 85.
Three days before what would have been her 85th birthday, Carl Gettleman’s mother, Getty died in the early morning hours of July 22, 2008, at her home in Los Angeles, the result of dementia with Lewy body, according to her family. She was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery, her headstone inscribed with the words “With Love and Laughter” and a Star of David to indicate her Jewish heritage.
Getty is survived by sons Barry and Gettleman; a brother, David Scher of London; and a sister, Rosilyn Howard of Las Vegas.
After their mother’s death in 2008, sons Carl and Berry Gettleman failed to agree on how to divvy up their mom’s possessions. So they chose to auction them through Bonhams & Butterfields.
“There was a living trust, but it didn’t delineate the division of property,” Carl Gettleman explains, noting the belongings also included Getty’s iconic wicker purse from the show, her Golden Globe, and her Emmy nomination certificate.
