Arlene is the eldest child of their parents- Joseph and Blanche (née Kral) Novak who both appeared with her younger sister Kim in the 1962 film The Notorious Landlady.
Both of Arlene’s parents were born in Chicago to people of Czech descent. Her father Joseph (1897–1987) was a history teacher who took a job as a freight dispatcher on the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad during the Great Depression. The siblings attended William Penn Elementary, Farragut High School, and Wright Junior College. Arlene’s younger sister Kim later won two scholarships to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
By all accounts, Arlene Novak and her younger sister Kim enjoyed a typical Midwestern childhood, though the sisters was quite shy as young girls and were animal lovers early in life. Kim told Carmelmagazine -“My sister and I would go out looking for injured birds and animals to help bring them back to health,” Novak recalls. “We put a sign in our window reading, ‘Bring Stray Pets Here.“

Kim’s elder sister Arlene Novak paid a visit to the set of “The Notorious Landlady” (co-starring Jack Lemmon and Fred Astaire) on the coast south of Carmel in 1962. Arlene decided to walk around the neighborhood and came across a house with a for sale sign out front.
“She said ‘I’ve seen a house you’ll love,’” Kim Novak recalls in an interview with Carmelmagazine. “We walked over. That day was heavy with fog, but just as I neared the house, it lifted, and the bright sun revealed the whole place. There had been a huge storm the previous year and most of the windows were boarded up. I walked around the place on its catwalks. It was beautiful, everything I loved, high ceilings, stained glass, a bathtub that looked out on the ocean. In fact, that bathtub had a big rock in it, tossed in by the storm.“

After they left the set, Kim couldn’t get her mind off the house, she called the Realtor and quickly bought the house. Gull House became Kim’s hideaway while still living in LA. After a mudslide destroyed her Bel Air home, the actress decided she was done with Hollywood and made Gull House her main residence.
Though the sister lived apart, Kim never missed a chance to visit her elder sister Arlene Novak. In 2018, she shared a post with her fans about her visit to her “brave” sister Arlene. The actress revealed, her sweet sister tried to put on a happy face for her in Denver before she is moved her back to Missouri. The actress revealed Arlene will be at a new Rehab facility in Missouri and able to keep working with speech therapy and also trying to get some feeling back on her right side. The sweet sisters still take care of each other.
