Annie Martell met John Denver at Gustavus Adolphus College, in St. Peter, Minnesota, where she was a student and he was playing a concert. They kept in touch with phone calls and dated for a while before tying the knot in 1967. They got married in a beautiful ceremony in the presence of their friends, family, and loved ones. Their marriage was an inspiration for many young fans.

One of John Denver’s biggest hits, “Annie’s Song“, was written for his wife. The song was released as a single from Denver’s album, Back Home Again. It was his second number-one song in the United States, occupying that spot for two weeks in July 1974. “Annie’s Song” also went to number one on the Easy Listening chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 25 song for 1974. He composed the song in only ten minutes as he sat on a Colorado ski lift after the couple argued.

 The song was written while the couple’s marriage was beginning to disintegrate, a situation he was almost solely responsible for Orlando Sentinel revealed. The publication also revealed that, the singer admits he began to cheat on Annie within weeks of their wedding because he was lonely on the road.

Annie Martell and John Denver lived in Edina, Minnesota, from 1968 to 1971. After the success of “Rocky Mountain High”, inspired by a camping trip with Annie and some friends, the singer bought a residence in Aspen, Colorado. He lived in Aspen continuously until his death. Annie Martell and her husband adopted a boy, Zachary John, and a girl, Anna Kate, who, Denver said, were “meant to be” theirs.

Denver once said, “I’ll tell you the best thing about me. I’m some guy’s dad; I’m some little gal’s dad. When I die, Zachary John and Anna Kate’s father, boy, that’s enough for me to be remembered by. That’s more than enough“. Zachary was the subject of “A Baby Just Like You”, a song that included the line “Merry Christmas, little Zachary” which he wrote for Frank Sinatra.

Denver and Annie Martell divorced in 1982- They were married for 14 years before calling it a quit. In a 1983 interview shown in the documentary John Denver: Country Boy (2013), Denver said that career demands drove them apart; Martell said they were too young and immature to deal with Denver’s sudden success. Following the property settlement, Denver nearly choked Martell. He cut their marital bed in half with a chainsaw.

Annie Martell lives in Aspen and she has been a family therapist there for many years now. She never remarried after her divorce from Denver. Her ex-husband on the other hand had a second marriage in 1988 to young Australian actress Cassandra Delaney and had a daughter, Jesse Belle, but also ended in divorce.

Annie Martell’s ex-husband died in 1997 when the experimental Rutan Long-EZ planeaircraft registration number N555JD, crashed into Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove, California while making a series of touch-and-go landings at the nearby Monterey Peninsula Airport.
