Alene Gaines’ former husband is Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, born on January 22, 1915. His alternative names are Clarence LaVaughn Walker and C. L. Franklin. He was born to sharecroppers Willie and Rachel (née Pittman) Walker in Bolivar County, Mississippi, United States.
Clarence L Franklin is an American Baptist minister and civil rights activist who rose to fame as the man with the “Million-Dollar Voice”. He served as the pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, from 1946.
Alene’s past companion became a preacher at the early age of 16 years. He first worked for the black itinerant preaching circuit before settling at New Salem Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. He moved to the pulpit of the Friendship Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York, and became a pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. His sermons were recorded into the 1970s and broadcast sermons via radio on Sundays.
Most of his sermons were issued by Joe Von Battle’s JVB label. Some of his sermons and his life history in his own words are published in a volume edited by Jeff Todd Titon for the University of Illinois Press. He was into the civil rights movement as well and worked to end discriminatory practices against black United Auto Workers members in Detroit.
Clarence L Franklin was also known for his singing voice and for mastery of a style of musical preaching traditional in the Black Baptist church called “whooping”.He commanded up to $4000 per appearance for his public appearance.
He was the father of the American singer and songwriter Aretha Franklin and also the father of five other children, including Vaughn Franklin, Erma Franklin, Cecil Franklin, Carolyn Franklin, and Carol Ellan Kelley.

Alene Gaines’ ex-husband, Clarence L Franklin is dead. He was shot and wounded on Sunday, June 10, 1979. He was shot twice at point-blank range during what was said to have been an attempted robbery at his home on Detroit’s West Side. He was admitted to Henry Ford Hospital on nearby West Grand Boulevard and endured a coma for five years.
He passed away on July 27, 1984, in Detroit’s New Light Nursing Home. He was 69 years old when he died. He was entombed at Detroit’s Woodlawn Cemetery on North Woodward Avenue.
