Pauline Baez was born on 4 October 1938 in New Jersey, United States of America. She was the daughter of physicist  Albert Baez and his wife Joan Bridge. Aside from Joan, Pauline has another sister whose name is Mimi Fariña. Pauline is the eldest of the three girls. She was named after her mother’s elder sister Pauline Bridge Henderson aka Tia (Tia meaning “aunt” in Spanish, Albert’s native language).

As the siblings grew, Joan and Mimi drew closer, and their older sister Pauline turned inward. “When Mimi was very young, Pauline and I hated her,” Joan told The New York Times. “Mimi was the youngest and the prettiest, so Pauline and I conspired against her. That didn’t last long. Pauline was a loner.” 

When Pauline was about eleven, Joan recalled she built a tree house and spent much of her time between school and sleeping alone there; when she asked if she could play with her, Pauline replied, “Sure, you can be the daddy. Pauline Baez co-wrote one of the first great folk-rock songs, “Pack Up Your Sorrows”, along with singer Richard Fariña, who recorded it with his wife Mimi Baez Fariña, who was Joan and Pauline’s younger sister.

Pauline Baez’s mother was a lifelong anti-war activist, often demonstrating alongside Martin Luther King Jr, during the American civil rights campaign of the 1960s. Her father made important contributions to the early development of X-ray microscopes, X-ray optics, and later X-ray telescopes.

In 1991, the International Society for Optical Engineering awarded him and Kirkpatrick the Dennis Gabor Award for pioneering contributions to the development of X-ray imaging microscopes and X-ray imaging telescopes. Her father was the author of the textbook The New College Physics: A Spiral Approach (1967). He was the co-author of the textbook The Environment and Science and Technology Education (1987)
