Lisa Osteen is the first daughter of her parents John Hillery Osteen (August 21, 1921 – January 23, 1999), an American pastor and founding pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, and Dolores (“Dodie”) Pilgrim, an author. John and Dodie started Lakewood Baptist Church in “a dusty, abandoned feed store” in northeast Houston. Lisa was born with severe health issues. She had a condition similar to cerebral palsy. Her health condition challenged her father’s faith.
As her father wrestled with her circumstance, “his theological beliefs began to shift and he had ecstatic religious experiences, based on the baptism of the Holy Ghost.” Doctors did not believe her condition could be better and said she might not walk. It was perceived that she may face an early death due to her condition. However, she got healed and has been able to overcome the illness. She was miraculously healed before her first birthday after her parents prayed for her.

Also, Lisa Osteen went through another life-changing moment. Her life was at risk in 1990 when she reportedly opened a package containing a pipe bomb that exploded in her lap, riddling her office with nails and shrapnel. Someway somehow, her life was spared and she managed to survive. She escaped with minor injuries. According to Lisa:
“I was full of shame and felt disqualified from ministry. However, in the healing process, God not only restored my life — He called me to preach. So in the worst trial of my life, God didn’t change His mind about me; instead, He used it to catapult me into my destiny.”
