Gwendolyn Lee Byrd’s father was Euple Byrd. Euple was a construction worker who married her mother when she was just 17 years old. The couple had an age gap of 5, with Euple being the eldest. Her parents fought throughout their marriage. The couple got married in 1959. Wynette’s grandfather signed their marriage paperwork because Wynette was not yet of legal age and her mother also refused to sign the paperwork.
Her parent’s marital conflicts stemmed from her father being unable to hold down a steady job. According to sources, while Tammy was pregnant with their first child, the married couple lived in what was practically a shack. There was no heat or electricity, and the couple had to make do with whatever they could.

Tammy is also said to have joined beauty school to learn some skills and with some help from her mother and the use of her license, she worked as a beautician to stay on her feet and also to support the family. It is believed that she kept renewing the license until the last year of her life.
After becoming pregnant again, Wynette asked Euple to leave but he kept returning. After one argument, Wynette suffered a “nervous breakdown”, according to biographer Jimmy McDonough, and her family took her to a psychiatric hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with depression and gave her 12 rounds of electric shock treatment.
She tried many times to save her marriage but their problems continued and they eventually divorced in 1965. There were married for 7 years and produced three children as a result. After the marriage came to an ended her mother got married four times again to Don Chapel, George Jones, Michael Tomlin, and George Richey. In 1996, Gwendolyn Lee’s father was killed in a car crash at the age of 59.

Her mother also passed away on April 6, 1998, while sleeping at her Nashville, Tennessee home. She was 55 years old. Her death was certified by her doctor, Wallis Marsh in his original report that she died from a blood clot in her lung.
