Her parents’ marriage prompted her mother to relocate to Paris. Although Olivia and Pierre separated in 1962, they lived together for six more years to raise their daughter before their divorce was finalized in 1979. Gisèle Galante is a French freelance journalist.
Olivia de Havilland’s daughter did not follow in her footsteps. While she was a known actress, her daughter decided to do something different away from the entertainment industry. After studying law at the Université de Nanterre School of Law, Gisèle worked as a journalist in France and the United States. Career-wise, she followed in her father’s footsteps.
However, Gisèle is a fan of her mother’s works. While watching Dodge City, Galante was struck equally by her mother’s beauty and her performance: “I had never seen it before, but she was so, so pretty,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. She continued- “And even though it wasn’t what you would call a meaty role, she was excellent. There’s still so much for me to discover, more of my mother’s films that I have not seen.“
She said this while planning the auction of her mother’s estate in a two-part sale that kicks off with an online event that ran from May 13 to May 23, 2023, in Los Angeles. The Auction was organized by London-based Bonhams. “My mother had tremendous respect for her fans; unless she was sick, she answered every letter, and often I helped her,” Gisèle Galante told The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s really why I’m doing this, because I hope it will be an opportunity for those who loved her to purchase something that belonged to her.”

The personal items and Hollywood mementos auctioned included a silver compact that once belonged to Bette Davis and a check signed by both de Havilland and Errol Flynn.
Olivia de Havilland’s daughter told The Hollywood Reporter that her mother made no advance plans about selling her estate while she was still alive, however, she had a request: that a portion of any estate sale’s proceeds would be donated to The American Cathedral in Paris, which was built in the late 1880s.
“She told me she trusted me and asked me to be generous with the American Cathedral,” Gisèle Galante says. “My mother was a longtime parishioner and read the lessons on Christmas and Easter, so she really wanted the cathedral to be remembered.”
De Havilland died peacefully in her sleep of natural causes at her home in Paris on July 26, 2020, at the age of 104. Gisèle Galante’s mother was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her services to the film business.
